Orthodontic treatment for children in Fountain Valley

An orthodontic evaluation around age 7 allows our team to monitor your child’s growth and development. Even if treatment isn’t needed today, early evaluation can help identify potential concerns before they become more complex.

What parents should know about early treatment

Early orthodontic treatment is designed to identify and address certain orthodontic concerns while a child is still growing. This type of treatment is often referred to as Phase 1 orthodontics or interceptive orthodontics.

Phase 1 orthodontics is a focused, early phase of treatment for children typically between ages 6 and 10. The goal is not to create a perfect smile right away. Instead, treatment is designed to guide jaw and tooth development so future orthodontic care can be simpler and, in some cases, less extensive.

A Phase 1 evaluation does not mean your child will need treatment. Many children are monitored over time with no intervention at all. Knowing how your child’s teeth and jaws are developing helps create a clear plan for the future.

Signs your child may benefit from an early orthodontic exam

Your child’s dentist may have mentioned some of these. You may have noticed them yourself. Here are the most common reasons an orthodontist recommends early evaluation.

Anterior Crossbite

One or more front teeth bite inside the opposing front teeth instead of in their ideal position.

Teeth lack adequate space, leading to overlap and irregular positioning.

A restricted upper jaw may contribute to bite, spacing, and breathing concerns.

The lower teeth and jaw extend beyond the upper teeth.

When is the right time for orthodontic treatment?

The American Board of Orthodontics recommends children to get their first evaluation by age 7.

Age 7 is often the ideal time for an orthodontic evaluation because a child’s teeth and jaws are still developing, making it easier to identify concerns before they become more significant. While many children do not need treatment at this age, understanding how their smile is developing helps create a clear plan for the future.

At Kieu Orthodontics, our board-certified orthodontists have treated thousands of patients and specialize in recognizing developing orthodontic concerns early. When intervention is needed, early treatment can help guide growth, simplify future care, and support long-term oral health.

Frequently Asked Questions

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends an orthodontic evaluation by age 7. At this point, most children have a mix of baby and permanent teeth, which gives the orthodontist a clear view of how the bite and jaw are developing. Scheduling an evaluation does not mean treatment will follow. Many children simply need monitoring.
Not necessarily. Many children who come in for an early evaluation do not need any treatment at that time. Dr. Calvin or Dr. Kevin will either recommend a Phase 1 treatment plan, a monitoring schedule with periodic check-ins, or let you know that no action is needed until the permanent teeth have come in.
Phase 1 treatment typically lasts between 9 and 18 months, depending on the specific issues being addressed and how your child responds to treatment. After Phase 1 is complete, there is usually a resting period before any Phase 2 treatment is considered.
Some children will need Phase 2 treatment, typically comprehensive braces or clear aligners, once their permanent teeth have come in, usually around ages 11 to 14. Completing Phase 1 often makes Phase 2 shorter and less involved. In some cases, Phase 2 may not be needed at all. The doctor will advise you after Phase 1 is complete.
Many PPO dental insurance plans include some coverage for orthodontic treatment, including early intervention. Medi-Cal may also cover orthodontic treatment in certain cases. At Kieu Orthodontics, our team will help you review your insurance benefits before you start treatment so there are no surprises.
